His answer does make zsh run as a login shell on Mac OS X in iTerm. It just doesn't go about doing it the way you describe trying to. But it solves the problem that you question (in the title, rather than in the body) presents. The question you end with in the body is a completely different question.
To solve this problem and make zsh the default shell, you should thus: $ sudo echo "$(which zsh)" >> /etc/shells $ chsh -s $(which zsh) Obviously, I assume that zsh is in your path here. This solution will also work if you, for example, choose to install the latest zsh with brew install zsh. EDIT (thanks for ThisIsFlorianK for the comment):
Starting with macOS Catalina, Macs will now use zsh as the default login shell and interactive shell across the operating system. From a report: All newly created user accounts in macOS Catalina will use zsh by default. Bash will still be available, but Apple is signaling that developers should star...
The point is that the specific version of Bash that Apple chooses to ship can't get any improvements, while ZSH will not have that limitation. I'm sure they'll probably keep shipping Bash for a while, but making it non-default is the first step needed for deprecation.
zsh. The Z shell (also known as zsh) is a Unix shell that is built on top of bash (the default shell for macOS) with additional features. It's recommended to use zsh over bash. It's also highly recommended to install a framework with zsh as it makes dealing with configuration, plugins and themes a lot nicer. We've also included an file where we store our aliases, exports, path changes etc.
I'd recommend to always use just POSIX shell syntax, or at least be aware when you're using bashisms. Bash additions don't buy you much, yet make your script unportable. And using bashisms will get you actually in trouble in practice, since Debian uses dash as default shell, and now Mac OS is using zsh.
Dissed Bash boshed: Apple makes fancy zsh default in forthcoming macOS 'Catalina' 10.15 . For the past decade, Apple has avoided updating the Bourne Again SHell, better known as bash, for its desktop operating system due to the iGiant's distaste for the GPLv3 license attached to the command interpreter.
Change the Shell in Mac OS X Terminal. Tired of bash? Prefer zsh, ksh, tcsh, fish, or sh? You can quickly change the default shell in Terminal app, in addition to changing a users default login shell for when logging in remotely with SSH or otherwise. Here’s how to do both.

Pre-10.0, btw, the default user shell in what became Mac OS X was /bin/tcsh and, since I’ve never been a fan of C Shell and tcsh, the switch to zsh in 10.0 didn’t hurt me at all.
